Static Frequency Converter Options and Accessories

PX Electronics supplies options and accessories to adapt a Static Frequency Converter to the available input supply, connected load, installation environment and operating requirements.

Options can include alternative input and output arrangements, industrial or application-specific connectors, higher enclosure protection, conformal coating, communication interfaces, remote monitoring, mobile construction and aviation-specific cable systems.

These requirements should ideally be identified before manufacture. Connector arrangements, enclosure ratings, transformer configuration, cooling and cable entry can affect the physical construction of the SFC and may be difficult to change after delivery. Current PX SFC platforms already support IP22, IP32 and IP54 enclosures, hard-wired, IEC 60309 and MIL-standard connectors, remote interfaces and application-specific cable assemblies.

Input phase, voltage and frequency can be matched to the available site supply, while the output is configured for the voltage, phase arrangement and frequency required by the connected load.

Connectors & Cable Assemblies
Systems can be supplied with hard-wired terminals, industrial plugs and sockets, military-style connectors or customer-specified connection systems.

Environmental Protection & Installation Format
Enclosure, cooling, coating and installation options are available for clean indoor areas, industrial plants, hangars, marine facilities and other demanding environments, with rack-mounted, floor-standing, castor-mounted and towable arrangements considered according to rating and use.

Remote Control & Monitoring
Communication interfaces, volt-free contacts, external I/O, power metering and PX SFC Remote Watchdog monitoring can be incorporated where required.

Avionics & 400Hz Options
Aircraft cables, 400Hz connectors, line voltage-drop compensation, 28V DC outputs and aviation-specific control arrangements can be supplied for suitable systems.

PX Static Frequency Converters can be configured around the available electrical supply and the complete requirements of the connected equipment.

The converter rating, input current, phase arrangement, output voltage, frequency, load type, inrush current and connection method should all be considered together.

Choosing the Correct Connector

The connector should be selected from the electrical requirement first, not simply by physical size or appearance.

PX will normally review:

  • Rated voltage and continuous current
  • Single-phase or three-phase arrangement
  • Number of power, neutral, earth and control contacts
  • Cable conductor size and overall cable diameter
  • Load inrush and short-duration current
  • Frequency, including 400Hz operation
  • Required locking or interlocking
  • Number of expected mating cycles
  • Indoor, outdoor or exposed use
  • Connector ingress protection when mated and unmated
  • Strain relief and cable support
  • Prevention of incorrect connection through keying or coding
  • Whether disconnection under load must be prevented
  • Compatibility with existing site or aircraft equipment
  • Hard-Wired Terminals

Hard-wired terminals are normally the most practical choice for permanently installed, higher-current SFC systems. They reduce connector limitations and allow the site cable to be selected around the actual current, installation method and voltage-drop requirement.

IEC 60309 Industrial Connectors

IEC 60309 connectors are widely used for industrial plug-and-socket applications. The current IEC 60309-1 standard covers industrial accessories with ratings up to 1,000V AC or DC, frequencies up to 500Hz and currents up to 800A, although the actual connector selected must still be checked against its manufacturer rating and the application.

MIL-Standard Circular Connectors

MIL-DTL-5015 covers circular threaded connectors used in electrical power and control circuits. Different classes provide different contact, sealing, fluid-resistance and environmental characteristics, so quoting “MIL connector” alone is not enough to define the required assembly.

Customer-Specified Connections

Where equipment already has a defined inlet or cable interface, PX can review the mating connector, pin allocation, cable specification and interlock requirements as part of the SFC configuration.
